Family, friends, former students, and the Salem, Indiana, community are mourning the loss of John Curtis Hammond, a beloved educator, coach, and mentor who passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the age of 65. His passing has left a profound void among those whose lives he influenced throughout more than three decades of service in education and athletics.
Born on September 14, 1960, in Madison, Indiana, John was the son of the late Curtis and Shirley Frances Upp Hammond. A graduate of Madison Consolidated High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Hanover College in 1983 before completing a master’s degree in secondary education from Indiana University in 1989.
John began his teaching career with Salem Community Schools in 1992, where he spent 27 years inspiring middle school students as an English and Social Studies teacher before retiring in 2019. Beyond the classroom, he dedicated more than 30 years to coaching girls’ basketball, football, and baseball, recording more than 200 junior-level coaching victories while helping shape the lives of countless young athletes through encouragement, discipline, and leadership.
Former students remember John as a teacher who believed in every child and challenged them to reach their fullest potential. Fellow educators and coaches admired his integrity, patience, and unwavering commitment to both academic excellence and youth development.
Outside of school, John was a devoted member and deacon of Wirt Baptist Church and an active member of the Salem Exchange Club. He enjoyed reading, golfing, and spending time with family and friends, always bringing warmth, wisdom, and quiet humor to those around him.
John is survived by his brother, James Hammond; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will forever cherish his memory.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Wirt Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Dupont Cemetery in Dupont, Indiana.
John Hammond’s legacy of education, mentorship, faith, and service will continue to live on through the generations of students and athletes whose lives he helped shape.
