The Wilmington, North Carolina, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jacob Fernandez-Villa, a 16-year-old student-athlete whose life was tragically cut short in a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning, July 30, 2026. His passing has left his family, friends, classmates, teammates, teachers, and coaches grieving the loss of a young man remembered for his kindness, dedication, and passion for soccer.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 1:58 a.m. on Porters Neck Road near Market Street. Investigators say Jacob’s vehicle left the roadway, struck a ditch, and collided with several trees. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Authorities later confirmed that Jacob was ejected from the vehicle during the collision.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office initially responded after receiving an automatic 911 crash notification from Jacob’s cellphone. Deputies searched the area but were unable to immediately locate the vehicle. When Jacob failed to return home, his mother used his phone’s location services to help authorities pinpoint his location, leading deputies to discover the wrecked vehicle concealed in a wooded area. Despite emergency response efforts, Jacob was pronounced deceased. The crash remains under investigation.
Jacob was a student at Emsley A. Laney High School, where he was a proud member of the Class of 2027 and played on the school’s junior varsity soccer team. He also competed for the Hammerheads Soccer Club – Wilmington ECNL Regional League, where he was known for his commitment, teamwork, and love for the game.
Following news of his passing, Laney High School announced that Jordan Gym would be opened to provide grief counseling and a place for students and staff to gather in support of one another. School officials encouraged anyone struggling with the loss to seek comfort and reminded the community that no one has to grieve alone.
The Wilmington soccer community has also shared heartfelt tributes honoring Jacob’s sportsmanship, dedication, and positive spirit. Teammates and coaches remember him as a hardworking player who encouraged those around him and formed lasting friendships through the sport he loved.
Although his life ended far too soon, Jacob Fernandez-Villa’s legacy will live on through the memories he created, the friendships he built, and the countless lives he touched with his kindness and determination.
