The Oswego, Illinois, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Michael Anthony “Mike” O’Toole, a beloved educator, coach, mentor, and assistant principal at Neuqua Valley High School, who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 29, 2026, at the age of 49. His passing has left family, friends, former students, colleagues, and athletes reflecting on the extraordinary life of a man whose compassion, leadership, and unwavering dedication touched countless lives.
Mike devoted 23 years to Neuqua Valley High School, serving as a history teacher, basketball coach, dean, and eventually assistant principal. Throughout his career, he became known not only for his commitment to education but also for the genuine care he showed every student and colleague. Many former players remember him as a coach who believed in people long before they believed in themselves.
One former athlete recalled that after losing vision in one eye during high school, Mike encouraged him to compete in a regional three-point shooting contest despite the challenges. The athlete later remembered asking how many shots he had made because he could no longer see the basket, recalling that Coach O’Toole understood the seriousness of the moment and quietly supported him throughout the experience.
Beyond school, Mike was a devoted husband of 24 years to his wife, Rose, and a loving father to Bridget, Patrick, and Sean. Family was always the center of his life, whether traveling, cheering at sporting events, grilling in the backyard, or simply spending time together. His children remember him as the ultimate sports dad who constantly reminded everyone that they were there to have fun and enjoy the game.
Known for his adventurous spirit, Mike embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved hiking, CrossFit, jiu-jitsu, running marathons, and taking on seemingly impossible athletic challenges, inspiring those around him to pursue growth, resilience, and perseverance.
As news of his passing spread, heartfelt tributes poured in from former students, athletes, coworkers, and friends who remembered his kindness, humor, wisdom, and ability to positively influence every room he entered.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Dunn Family Funeral Home in Oswego, followed by a Celebration of Life at Neuqua Valley High School on Tuesday, August 4. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the O’Toole children’s educational fund and invited guests to bring a favorite photograph with Mike to share with his family.
